What if your kids don't listen to you? - AmericaNowNews.com

What if your kids don't listen to you?

Cultivating good communication skills with your young child can lead to a better relationship with them as they grow up.  Our America Now expert, Betsy Brown Braun has some solution-based advice.  According to her book, You're Not the Boss of Me,

Your days are numbered.  Sad though it is, there will come a time when your child will prefer communicating (texting, IMing, posting on Facebook or tweeting, etc.) with friends more than talking with you.  Somewhere between the ages of eleven and seventeen, it will happen.

The communications you have with your child are a gift, so honor them.  When your child talks to you, take the time to listen.  Stop what you are doing, turn your body to fact your child, and look him in the eye.

If you are unable to take the time that he deserves, give him a quick listen and say, "I really want to hear what you have to say, but I can't give you my full attention right this minute.  I hope it can wait until I come to a stopping point."  Be sure to get back to him as soon as possible.  If you forget, it is a clear message.

Betsy Brown Braun's bestseller, Just Tell Me What To Say, now in its 4th printing, presents the tried and true tools her clients use daily to handle situations that inevitably accompany raising children ages 2-6 and beyond. Her second book and second bestseller, You're Not The Boss Of Me, also in its 4th printing, is the ultimate hands-on guide to cultivating character traits that are tried and true "bratbusters."

You need not lose touch with your teenager.  A little communication in the early years can go a long way in bringing you and your child together.
