Things you should buy with plastic

While running up a balance on a high-interest credit card is not a good idea, there are some things that are good to buy with plastic -- if you can afford them.

If you're going to spend a small fortune on a new television, using plastic could mean not only an extended warranty over and above the original warranty, but some cards even offer "price protection." This means that if you find a better price in 60 days, you can by reimbursed the difference!

Another good time to use a credit card is if you have work done on your house. If you use a check or your debit card to pay a contractor or repair person, the money is gone -- and it may be hard to get back if you aren't happy with the work that was done. If you use a credit card, the card company can help you dispute any questionable charges or try to get a refund.

Travel expenses are also a good things to put on your plastic. That is not to say that charging a big vacation is a good idea if you can't afford it, but you should look into the travel perks on your credit card. Many offer car rental insurance and lost luggage insurance, for example.

Another thing to think about charging is monthly memberships. Things like your gym membership, or even your cable bill. The credit card company can be another layer of protection if you want to cancel or modify the terms of your deal.

So before you decide to cash out on a purchase, consider what you could be saving if you swipe it instead.
