Headaches vs. migraines

The hurt that comes from headache pain is no fun, but knowing the type of headache you have can help you control them.

Some people can hardly function when it kicks in, but there is a difference in headache pain.

While any kind of headache can wreck havoc on your day it's important to know the difference between a typical tension headache and a migraine.

Dr. Jennifer Kriegler is a headache specialist at the Cleveland Clinic.

"With migraine people don't want to do things. They want to lay down. They want to stop what they do. Many people will push through it, but if they had their choice they will lay down in a dark, quiet room," said Dr. Jennifer Krieger.

Dr. Kriegler says migraine headaches last anywhere from 4 to 72 hours. Those pains typically worsen with movement, are one-sided, and throbbing in nature. Migraines can also cause light and noise sensitivity and nausea and vomiting. She says the other types of headache include tension, cluster, and even exercise-induced headaches.

Another big difference between migraine and other headaches is when they typically strike.

"The most common time for migraine to occur is first thing in the morning. So, if you look at migraine across 24 hours the most common times for them to occur are between 4 and 9 o'clock in the morning," said Dr. Jennifer Kriegler.
