Tips for new college grads

If you're a recent college grad, and you're looking for a leg up on that first great job, there are some critical mistakes you need to avoid. But the right things to do aren't written in ink.

Brooke Donaldson applied for her dream job - training seeing eye dogs.

"I think I've just been impatient about that because I want to have plans and I'm not sure what I'll be doing for the summer so I'm just hoping they'll get back with me soon," said Donaldson.

College seniors say that is too often the case for graduates these days.

"I have a lot of close friends that aren't sure what they're doing and they're all going home and we're all parting in different directions," said Kathryn Rice, another recent graduate.

Rice says that landing that first job out of school is all about marketing yourself. "That's kind of how you get your name out there. The more people you know, the more opportunities you have."

Dr. Tom Woddle, a Director of Career Services, says, "Networking is the key. Your chances of getting a job if you're only sending a resume out to a job board is only about 2 percent so you really have to network. You have to know people who know people who know people."

Job placement services adds one important note - internships are invaluable. Those who have internships are 60% more likely to land that first job than those who don't.
