Can gum help your kid focus?

Did you know that chewing gum can boost your intelligence?  If you don't believe that, chew on this:

A recent study revealed some surprising results. Gum not only provided fresh breath, but higher math scores as well.

The study looked at a group of 8th grade math students who were chewing gum during class, during homework time and during testing time. This information was compared to children who were not chewing gum during those periods of time. Findings proved there were improvements on standardized test scores for those children chewing gum.

Better scores may result from the physiological effect of chewing gum. The act of chewing increases blood flow to the brain, which improves concentration and reduces stress.

Researchers point out there are better ways for students to focus on their school work. Listening and paying attention are the two key skills people use to learn, but everyone is different and there is no accounting for the occasional gum-chewing genius.

Another strategy used to help students concentrate is the act of doodling. Busywork like doodling can be very helpful in stimulating young minds, making it easier to retain information.
