Three things you should say to score a job

If you're looking for work, you know how competitive the job market is. It's common to have hundreds of applicants for a single position. Our communications coach, Marcia Brandwynne, says there are three important things you must say in an interview to increase your chances of getting the job.

"Job interviews have always been played for laughs on TV sitcoms. But in real life, job interviews are no joke. Especially if you really need the job," she says. "You only have a few minutes to impress an interviewer. But what you say in those few minutes can really make the difference between getting the job and continued unemployment."

Here are Marcia's tips for nailing your interview:

  • You want to say: "I know about your company." Do your homework. Visit
the web site. And think about how your talents fit in. Then be prepared to ask a
few thoughtful questions about their business.
  • It's important to say: "I know my strengths." Be prepared to tell a story
or two about how you handled a problem or came up with a solution. And if
you're asked what your weaknesses are, be sure to have one tucked away in
your mind that you can easily explain.
  • Be sure to say: "I'm a team player." Companies hate it when employees
can't work together. Make sure they know that collaborating with others is
    one of your strong suits.

If you do these things, you're putting yourself in the best position to get the job.
