Tips for saving on college tuition

When it comes to saving for college, scholarships are a lifesaver for many students and their families.

Kristen Macks helps students find that scholarship money. She says it's really a four or five-year process, so students should start early and do their research.

When it comes to local scholarships, community involvement is huge – and it can be emphasized with a resume that students should start building early.

"It is a great way to highlight all of your achievements," says Macks. "All of your work achievements. Anything that wouldn't necessarily would be on your high school transcript, so you are basically marketing yourself."

Another way to save money is to get college credit while still in high school. There are honors and advanced placement (AP) courses available for students who want to earn college credit while in high school, saving some money on tuition costs.

Ryan Kube helps families figure out how to pay for college. He also helps students figure out what they want to do, so they don' t waste time or dollars when they get there.

"The biggest expense is staying a fifth or sixth or even seventh year if it is a four-year program," he says. "The number one thing all people can do is get out in the shortest amount of time possible. And it helps immensely if you go to school with a purpose."

The unfortunate news is that many experts don't see an end in sight to the year after year tuition hikes, because the cost of college hasn't hurt enrollment levels.
