How to keep your guard up against date rape - AmericaNowNews.com

Date rape defense

According to the U.S. Department of Justice, someone is sexually assaulted every two minutes in the United States. National statistics show that only one out of six rapes are ever reported to law enforcement and that nearly two-thirds of all rapes are committed by an acquaintance of the victim, whether it be a friend, relative, spouse or date.

The challenge behind date rape is that you let your guard down, because it's someone you trust enough to take you out on a date. But experts say you can never be 100 percent sure about anyone.

"Most rapists are people you know," says Bill Farris of Crisis Services of North Alabama.

In a recent police report from Huntsville, Ala., a 19-year-old woman told police she thought she knew the guy who was taking her out on a date. He raped her in a public park.

Bill Farris says someone can become a victim of date rape after letting their guard down, giving a rapist the two things they need.

"They need isolation and control, and if you can deny him those two things, then you can avoid it," says Farris.

Here are more tips to help avoid date rape:

  • If your date changes plans, tell someone where you will be.
  • Make sure you set some boundaries and don't let them be crossed.
  • Alcohol and drug use can reduce awareness.
  • If you become a victim of sexual assault, report it.
