Easy cleaning tip for a microwave mess

Did you ever open your microwave to discover someone in your household had reheated their food without a lid, but you're stuck as the designated cleaner? Our America Now tipster, Zorianna Kit, is going to experiment with an improbable solution to this sticky situation.

"We've all seen the kitchen crime scene of filthy microwave oven horror," she says. "Whether it's at home or at work, everyone uses the microwave. But nobody cleans up after themselves until, one day, you've got a massive mess on your hands. Although it looks daunting to clean, I've found an 'urban kitchen legend' on the Internet that seems way too simple to work!"

Supposedly all you need is a measuring cup filled with water and a lemon.

"I know it's hard to believe that these two common ingredients can do such a big job," says Zorianna. "My first instinct is to put on a hazmat suit and bring out my strongest chemicals and scrubs. Let's give the lemon water a shot!"

  • If you want to clean your microwave, first cut a lemon and squeeze it into a microwave-safe bowl of water. About a cup and a half will do. If you don't have an actual lemon, lemon juice will do just fine.
  • Take the water and place it in the microwave and heat until it's very hot – to a boil, which is about eight to nine minutes.
  • Then, let it sit there for about 10 minutes so the lemon steam can go to work coating the walls of the microwave.

The steam from the hot water will loosen the dirt and the enzymes in the citric acid will cut through the grease. While you're waiting, you can do something fun, like figure out what you want for dinner.

Finally, take the hot water out and use potholders in case it's still hot. Wipe down the inside of the microwave with a damp cloth or sponge. A few swipes, and the dirt slides right off.

"So easy, so simple. The point is, you don't have to spray toxic chemicals," says Zorianna. "Plus, your kitchen will smell lemony!"
