CT scans provide better diagnoses for sinus infections

Doctors are using mini CT technology to help diagnose a not-so-mini complaint: Severe congestion, pain around the eyes, aching teeth, headaches.

Dr. Timothy Feger of Family Allergy & Asthma near Louisville, KY. says that even with these symptoms, trying to determine whether it's a common cold, allergies or full-blown sinus infection can still be difficult.

The CT scans are giving doctors a picture-clear answer, showing them whether or not sinuses are draining properly…or at all.

They give proof when a patient needs aggressive antibiotic treatment and not just more time or an adjustment to allergy meds.

"One of the problems with sinus infections is they're under-treated," says Dr. Feger. "If it's truly infected, you may only be treated for seven days or 10 days. It's hard for antibiotics to clear out the sinuses in that amount of time. A lot of people need them for three weeks, or four weeks, or maybe even six weeks of treatment in order to totally clear it."
