Picking the perfect pineapple

Pineapple is a luxury many of us pass up because buying fresh-cut pineapple is so expensive. Our food pro, Devin Alexander, shows how to choose the best pineapple at the market and the easy, quick way to cut it up.

"First thing is how to choose the right pineapple," says Devin. "You want to look for yellow. Then you smell it [to see if it's] nice and sweet. You definitely want to get a sweet one, because if it doesn't smell sweet, it's not going to be sweet. If a pineapple is green, it won't smell sweet and it's never going to be ripe and then you want to be careful not to get one that's over-ripe."

So once you have the perfect pineapple, what do you do with it?

"Cutting a pineapple is really easy," says Devin. "First I'm going to cut the top off, you can save that to be the center of your platter. It looks really pretty; like you slaved when you didn't. Then I am going to cut the bottom off, that way you have a really solid base. Cut the skin off the sides. Make sure you cut deep enough that you get the eyes out."

Next you cut it in half. And then in quarters. And then cut out the cores.

"Then you want to start slicing your pineapple. Cut each of these pieces in half and then just take your knife in the size of the pieces you want," Devin concludes. "It's easy!"
