Are you getting enough protein?

Getting enough protein is a real problem for people who can't or don't eat meat. Our wellness expert, Peggy Hall, shares some protein alternatives that are both affordable and fun -- oh, and you can find them at just about any grocery store, too!

"When it comes to protein alternatives, we think about fish and eggs and cottage cheese," says Peggy. "But I've got some things you might not have thought of! For example, did you know that green peas are an excellent source of protein? They're also full of fiber and vitamin C. One cup has about 150 calories and eight grams of protein."

Here's another great and surprising source of protein. Quinoa.

While many might mistake quinoa for a grain, it's actually a seed. It has about 10 grams of protein per cup, which is about 200 calories. You cook it just like rice and you can serve it as a side dish or have it in the morning in place of oatmeal.

How about sardines? One can has 19 grams of protein and costs only about a dollar. Sardines are also a really great source of Omega-3 fatty acids, which are good for your moods, your memory and your metabolism. Just like tuna, you can have sardines on a salad, on some crackers, or even a sardine sandwich.

"My favorite source of protein is the Greek style non-fat plain yogurt," adds Peggy. "One cup gives you 22 grams of protein for only 120 calories."

All of these products are inexpensive and easy to find.

"Even if you're on a budget, there's no reason to skimp on your protein," Peggy says. "We need protein for our bones, for our muscles, and especially to keep our skin firm and resilient."
