Shortage of heartworm medication for dogs

Without treatment, heartworms can be deadly to dogs. Immiticide, the medication used to treat the ailment, is in short supply.

In fact, there is currently no U.S. manufacturer of the product.

Animal health supplier Merial is temporarily importing limited quantities of Immiticide from its European supplier. However, this product is not FDA approved.

The European Immiticide is only available from Merial through a restricted distribution program. Animal clinics are able to request the treatment on a case by case basis by contacting Merial at 1-888-637-4251.
