The power of gratitude

Science has confirmed that "counting your blessings" is a powerful tool to achieving happiness and a sense of well being. People who adopt an attitude of gratitude have been shown to make more money, sleep more soundly and have greater resistance to disease.

"Some of us may say we feel grateful, but we don't think about it very much," says Coach Marcia Brandwynne. "And that's a mistake, because the conscious act of acknowledging all the good things in your life is key to reaping the benefits that gratitude brings."

So here are a couple of things you can do that won't take a lot of time, but will reward you with greater joy in your life:

  • First, start a gratitude journal and write down some of the things you are truly grateful for. By listing the positives in your life, you become more mindful and appreciative of them. In fact, there are several free apps and websites to help you create your own gratitude journal. You can do it once a week or every day, but the important thing is to make it a habit, and make it fresh.

  • Take the time to express to someone how grateful you are for what they bring to your life. Write them a gratitude letter or pay them a gratitude visit. Telling someone in person how important they are to you not only lifts their spirits; it will go a long way in helping you to achieve a lasting happiness in your own life. Making gratitude visits with children is a great way to start fostering a sense of appreciation in them.
