Grab It: Victorian bamboo

Did you know antique Victorian bamboo furniture is a hot collector's item? Certain pieces can be worth a fortune -- but beware of modern day knock-offs!

Here's how to identify the good stuff so you can grab it.

What you want to look for is English "Victorian Era" bamboo.

"If you see a piece of old English bamboo, generally dated to the 1880's, grab it. It is a wonderful addition to any home. They're beautifully made. The pieces are very often fitted together," says Antiques Expert Francesca de la Flor.

Black lacquer details and woven grass tops are important characteristics to look for when shopping for authentic English Victorian bamboo.

"This was supposed to be furniture that would last a few seasons and then be thrown away," says Francesca. "But in fact, there's much of it around because it has lasted more than 130 years and it's sturdy!"

But buyer beware: The market is flooded with cheap, modern day imitations that don't stand the test of time. English Victorian bamboo is practical, stylish and a good investment. So keep your eyes peeled and if you find some for sale … grab it!
