Congestive heart failure patients getting younger

Shortness of breath is a common symptom of congestive heart failure (CHF). The heart isn't pumping the way it should.

Many people with heart failure manage their disease with medicines.

Cardiologist Lance Lamotte says, "Most of the medicines are geared to not only improve symptoms, but to improve survival."

Lamotte is happy new treatments have dramatically improved the long-term outlook for patients suffering CHF.

What concerns him is the explosion of heart failure cases in people who are younger age. "The 65 and over, it's certainly extremely common, but that trend has shifted lower."

Experts blame the obesity epidemic and related conditions like diabetes, hypertension and high cholesterol – all have been linked to a higher risk of heart failure.

Doctors would always rather prevent heart failure, but once caught--they say there's no reason people can't live an active life, as long as they're on some type of therapy.

Like any disease, the sooner congestive heart failure is diagnosed, the more effective the treatment will be.
