Wearing a helmet during severe weather could save your life

It might sound odd, but the next time severe weather threatens, having a helmet to wear during the storm could actually save your life.

Many meteorologists suggest you should wear a helmet during tornado warnings, and that has been the case for a while. One of the reasons is because of debris that may be flying around during a storm. You never know what might be flying around - a washer or refrigerator, among other large objects. All could be very dangerous if you're caught in the middle of a storm or if you were to become a flying object.

Mark Baker is a doctor at the University of Alabama in Birmingham. He works in the trauma unit at Children's of Alabama and he stresses how helmets can protect kids from severe injury. However, kids are not the only ones at risk - we're all vulnerable.

"These are terrible injuries and unlike a lot of injuries, they can be lessened. Just like it took people 10 to 15 years to get into the habit of wearing seat belts," says Dr. Baker.

So what kind of helmet would he suggest? "Having anything around the house - a hard hat, a baseball helmet, or most often a bicycle helmet."

And remember - looking for a helmet instead of heading for shelter during a tornado warning may not be the best use of your time. It's a good idea to keep helmets for everyone in your family close to your normal safe area so they're easily available if and when the time comes.
