Tablet app helps track down stolen device

"Amanda" thought her iPad and other valuables stolen in a robbery were lost and gone forever, until new technology on her tablet gave her a crystal clear image of who may be in possession of her stolen property.

"I came home and found my sliding glass door busted out with a brick," says "Amanda," who asked not to be identified since the investigation is ongoing. She says burglars made off with jewelry, a firearm, televisions, and another computer as well.

"I didn't think I'd see them again," she says, "until I got a picture on my iPhone."

"Amanda" found two photos taken by a person she didn't know, sent from her iPad. They were sent to her phone thanks to a technology called iCloud, which links all of her Apple devices together. Tech experts at Connection Point say there is no doubt the photos were sent from her stolen device.

"When it's registered, it's done by serial number, so it's tethered to that machine directly," says Justin Gowith of Connection Point. Gowith says iCloud has dozens of ways to help track lost or stolen devices, but it comes with a catch.

"It has to be turned on beforehand," Gowith says.

Still, coming face to face with someone who may have her stolen iPad has given "Amanda" renewed hope she may find her valuables.

"Without Apple being smarter than the criminals," Amanda says, "I wouldn't have seen their pictures. At least I have the last laugh."
