Close-shaving tips

Not too many women like to kiss a guy with stubble.

You might think a five o'clock shadow looks sexy, and it certainly can, but your scratchy face may be irritating more than just her skin.

Beauty Expert Jessica Metivier asked "Mohawk Matt" of Bolt Barbers about getting a closer shave at home that will keep your face kissable well into the evening.

"It's all about skin prep. You can't just run a razor over the face," explains Matt. "Part of putting shaving cream on the face is to soften and moisturize and lubricate so that you don't get skin rashes."

At barbershops you often see hot towels, which he explains serves a similar function as shaving in the shower -- opening the pores, and allowing you a much more comfortable, much closer shave.

"We like a pre-shave oil. [It's] very, very important to prepare and lubricate the skin, also because a shaving oil won't dry up like a shaving cream will," says Matt. "And use either a shaving soap and lather it up nicely with a nice bristled brush, or use a very high-density, very rich cream. It's better to lather that up with a brush than it is to use an aerosol and just kind of slop it on your face."

You should shave with the grain of your facial hair. Pull your skin tight and do a nice swipe.

"At the very least you need an aftershave as an antiseptic to neutralize and sterilize what you've just done," Matt adds. "Now you need to close those pores. So put a cold towel on, and you're skin is going to be left baby smooth."

If you've never had an old-fashioned straight razor shave before, you should definitely treat yourself sometime. But now you know how to get a kissably close shave, at home!
