Coupon Mom: Saving on meds

Lots of people use coupons to save money on groceries and household supplies—but what about at the pharmacy? "Coupon Mom" Stephanie Nelson shares her expert strategies for saving money on prescription meds.

Stephanie, founder of CouponMom.com, not only helps folks save money on groceries, but also says the same strategies can be applied to saving on prescription drugs. The first step is to shop around.

"One of the easiest ways to save on prescriptions is to compare the cost of your prescription between different pharmacies," says Stephanie. "Go ahead and look online for prices or call the pharmacist at your local drug stores and grocery stores to see what the price of that drug is and you'll find that it varies widely."

Stephanie also reminds us to ask about the availability of generics.

"Many stores have very attractive generic programs," says Stephanie. "You'll pay as little as $4 for a 30-day supply of your prescription, which is less than most insurance co-pays. And then of course there are even coupons available for prescriptions and most people don't realize that. Probably the easiest way to find them is to go to a search engine and enter the name of the prescription with the word 'coupon' and you may land on the manufacturer's web site. They may have a savings program you could join or coupons you could print that could save as much as $20 to $30 per month per prescription."

Stephanie says another deal to look for is the prescription transfer programs.

"Grocery stores and drug stores frequently have coupons in their ads that will give you a $25 gift card to their store if you transfer a prescription to their pharmacy," says Stephanie.

Before your next trip to the pharmacy, remember Stephanie's money saving tips: Compare prices, choose generics, and use coupons. If you do, she says you can save potentially hundreds of dollars per year on prescription drugs.
