Cruise Night: A family tradition

People just love showing off their classic cars, and these gatherings can be a fun family activity, too. Our auto expert, Steve Strope, pops the hood on the tradition and shows us the nuts and bolts of "Cruise Night."

Steve is in Burbank, California at Bob's Big Boy, one of America's most famous burger joints, where every Friday night, classic car lovers get together to socialize and show off their rides.

"They start arriving by late afternoon to get the best spots," says Steve. "And by the time the sun goes down, it really becomes a scene! What better way for you and your family to spend a night out than grabbing a burger and a shake and checking out some of your town's coolest cars?"

Ray is a devoted Mustang owner.

"I own a 1969  Mach 1. I've always been obsessed with it. And my wife heard the stories about this for years, and surprised me on Father's Day with my dream car. And the first thing my five-year-old said was, 'We get to go to Bob's!' I was coming before he was born and then I brought him and we didn't have a car to bring. We would just come and look at all the cars," says Ray.

Fellow cruiser, Charlie, says that his 1964 Ford Falcon two-door hard top is "pretty much stock-looking ‘64 Ford falcon on the outside, but it's got the heart of ‘91 Mustang, basically. I've been coming here for 20 years. I've been going to Cruise Nights for 50!"

Charlie adds that while he used to attend for the cars, now it's more about the people.

"I've met so many really cool people at Cruise Night," he notes.

Leo says, "Most of the guys that come here, they're all buddies. You know, they know each other for years. That's how it goes here; everyone's family."

Steve says there are some things to keep in mind about attending a Cruise Night:

  • The participants take the best parking spaces, so be prepared to park somewhere else.
  • Always ask the vehicle owner before touching or even taking a photo of their car.
  • To show your support, buy the food at the local restaurant that's hosting the Cruise Night.

For a unique family night out, just check the Internet for a cruise night in your area and have a blast from the past!
