Getting started on your scrapbooks

Scrapbooking is a fun and valuable activity for adults and kids alike, but a lot of people who want to try it don't know where to begin.

America Now host Leeza Gibbons says "I'm a longtime scrapbooker and can tell you getting started is the hardest part. Here are some basic tips and materials to help beginner scrapbookers get going!"

Sharon Laakkonen has taught scrapbooking for nearly ten years, and has created hundreds of pages highlighting the lives of her seven children.

"So, you decided you want to scrapbook but it's a whole new world. First thing you want to do is to get an album," says Sharon, "A basic layout is going to have pattern paper or card stock. It's going to have your photos, a title, maybe some journaling, and then you can embellish, and that's my favorite part. If you like to be creative, you're going to want to add stickers and flowers, different embellishments that you like that match your page and that you're going to personalize them with what you love."

The part of memory keeping I love the most is journaling. Some people overlook this and think it's too difficult. But it really can make a memory last forever.

"People are sometimes intimidated saying I can't write," says Leeza Gibbons, "I don't know where to start. Start with telling a story. This page merely tells the story of how Troy's tooth fairy used to have glitter on her wings. And used to always leave all of the fairy dust all over the pillow, before she would leave the dollar. So it's just as simple as that.  And it doesn't have to be perfect; it's just your family's story."

So remember the basics:

  • Choose an album
  • Mount your photos on colored or patterned paper
  • Title the page
  • Add embellishments

...and don't forget to journal!
