People want to look their best, and in some cases they will stop at nothing to get that done.
Body modification can be a simple skin treatment, a hair cut or even surgery. The variety of options available can be overwhelming. There are thousands of options available. We all want to look our best -- but what are you willing to do to get there?
Waxing involves a hot liquid being smoothed onto the skin, then a special cloth is placed over it. In one swift motion, the hair is ripped from the skin.
Sounds like a method of torture, right?
For some waxing is painful, but the end result is smooth, hair-free skin. For a more permanent solution, there is another option. Laser hair removal can be painful, but after a few treatments not only is the hair gone, it is gone for good.
Images of stick figure models and ripped muscle men line the cover of thousands of magazines, fueling Americans' obsession with the quest for beauty.
It's an obsession that isn't fading, so we decided to take a look at some of the treatments and procedures available.
Tattoos are one of the oldest forms of body modification, dating back thousands of years. This body art form is still in practice today.
Rodney Clark has been in the business for 17 years. If you can imagine it, Clark can design it. Many of his customers say a tattoo is more than a right of passage or kind of look. Each tattoo represents something special.
"The first one [tattoo] was right whenever I was 18. They mean something to me, I guess you could say," says Brandy Joe.
The quest for flawless skin is another million-dollar industry. Creams and medicines line the shelves of stores with promises of getting rid of wrinkles and making your skin look younger. But, a more radical treatment gets much quicker results. A chemical peel uses different strengths of acids to peel off a layer of skin to expose newer skin underneath.
"[They] do leave a little bit of a texture change. So, you are going to notice an improvement with that. I think it's a smoothness that most people love the feel of," says Dr. Victoria Everton.
Dr. Everton says they use lasers, Bot ox, fillers and peels in her practice.
It has been said that beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Everyone has taste that is a little different. But whether you are waxed, zapped, inked, peeled, plumped, plucked or pierced; one thing is the same -- it all can be painful, proving another popular saying that 'beauty is pain.'
