Scam Alert: Crooks posing as FDA agents - AmericaNowNews.com

Crooks posing as FDA agents

Cyber crooks are posing as FDA agents trying to extort money from people who shop for prescription medications on the Internet. Here's what you need to know to avoid this costly con.

According to the FDA, here's how the scam works:

Someone will call pretending to be an FDA special agent. You'll be told that purchasing drugs over the Internet or telephone is illegal. You'll be threatened with prosecution unless a fine ranging from $100 to $250,000 is paid.

If the victim refuses to pay up, the caller threatens to search properties, arrest or deport them, put them in jail, and even physically harm the victim.

Agents say the best way to avoid this scam is to hang up.

When buying medicine online:

-Check for a physical street address.

-See if the company is licensed by the state board of pharmacies.

-Make sure a prescription from your doctor is required.
