    Top three Social Security scams

    Top Social Security scams

The American Association of Retired Persons told consumer resource Bottom Line Personalmagazine about the three most prevalent Social Security scams.
Are you a Social Security recipient? We've got the scoop from The American Association of Retired Persons (AARP) on the most prevalent scams that could be targeted at you!

You used to get your social security statement in the mail every year before your birthday. Our money expert Nathan Bachrach says those statements are now online, and it's probably something you should check out.

By logging on to socialsecurity.gov/statement you can check out your earnings history, and your projected social security benefits.  it's critical you check that information because there *could be* a mistake. Sometimes employers report the wrong wages, or transpose a few digits in your social security number. that means you aren't getting credit for that income.

Self-employed folks need to look closely at their numbers too since their income likely comes from several sources.

If you find an error, you need to pull your W-2 forms or tax documents, and call the Social Security Administration right away.

Another important reason to check your statement is to have a realistic idea of what you need to save for retirement. Social Security will project your future benefits, based on your work history. Of course, the longer you work and later you claim your benefits, the more money you'll get.

It's also important to remember that the payroll tax only funds about 75% of those benefits starting in 2033, so if you're a younger worker, what you get could be very different than the number listed. It's better to realize that now so you can save more on your own.
