A new study from TD Ameritrade finds 40% of Generation "Z", people aged 13 to 22, expect to get an inheritance. On the flip side of the equation -- just 16% of those kids' parents said they expect to give one.

Part of that is driven by finances. Many portfolios are still coming back from the big hit they took during the recession. Rising health care cost aren't helping, either. It's also philosophical. Among adults with at least $100,000 invested, nearly 60% said that leaving an inheritance wasn't a primary concern.

42% said saving for retirement topped their list. The bottom line is never count on an inheritance, even if your parents have the money, they may not leave it to you. It's better to make your own way and be pleasantly surprised than count on money that may never materialize.
