Medicare Supplements: What do they cover?

Supplemental insurance, also known as Medigap insurance, covers what original Medicare does not.

That includes some deductibles, co-pays, excess charges, hospice care and long term inpatient care.

This plan is best purchased during the six month open enrollment period which starts the first day of your birth month when you turn 65. That's because you can purchase any Medigap policy, even if you have health problems, for the same price as people with good health.

Finding the best Medigap plan through Medicare requires research, and to get the most benefits and coverage at a reasonable cost, you may need to talk about it with an insurance broker. But you can start the process on your own by comparing the same plan at several different insurance companies. As you can imagine, prices vary from one company to another, so there are some things that need to be considered.

For example, premiums for some plans may be lower, but you will be paying a higher out-of-pocket cost if you visit doctors and hospitals often. This price can affect how much you pay now and in the future.

Know your rights. In certain situations, insurance companies must (by law) sell or offer a Medigap policy even if you have health problems. In some cases, they must cover all pre-existing conditions and cannot charge you more for the policy because of past or present health issues.

There are several websites which will price compare for you, you just need to enter some personal information like your age, gender and zip code.
