Could steam from microwave popcorn make you sick?

You tear open the bag and that delicious plume of steam fills the air.

But according to the Environmental Protection Agency, that steam contains nearly 4-dozen chemicals.

The source of the chemicals - the coating inside the bag. Microwave popcorn bags have an inner liner laced with chemicals. When heated, those chemicals break down into a substance called flourotelomers. The EPA has identified flourotelomers as a likely carcinogen.

If you eat microwave popcorn, a scientist who studies microwave popcorn fumes at George Washington University says you should let the bag cool before you open it. By then the vapors will condense and there won't be any steam to breathe in.
