Regrets may be getting in the way of your happiness

Sure we've all had a few. But for some of us, regret can be a real roadblock. Unable to get over the past, we torture ourselves over what might have been and may even remain angry over decisions made about work, education, marriage or family. 

Regret can be a very unhealthy emotion. It can create physical stress and even lead to depression. But, we can choose to look at regret from a positive light since it can actually be a strong motivator in life to do things differently to not experience more regret.

So if you are stuck in regret, here are some suggestions that could help keep those negative thoughts at bay.

First, use regret as a tool to change behavior. For example, apologize for any harm you may have caused others. Ask for forgiveness and make amends.

And if making amends isn't possible, then forgive yourself and let it go. We do the best we can with what we know and feel at the time. Remind yourself that you'll try to make better decisions in the future.

And don't forget to recognize what you've learned from regret. There is always a lesson in pain and sadness. Identify that lesson and focus on it instead of what might have been.
