When to toss makeup

Many women treat makeup like it last forever, but in reality your favorite cosmetics eventually become breeding grounds for bacteria.

Beauty expert Jessica Metivier says manufacturers aren't required by law to put "use by" dates on their products, but there are some general guidelines and good reason to throw old make up out.

Jessica says the first reason is that it truly gets stale and loses its effectiveness. The most important reason is that makeup comes into contact with our eyes, mouths and fingers and you could spread bacteria and causes skin irritations and eye infections.

Next trust you eyes and nose. If the color has changed, there's separation or the smell is off it is time to toss.

When it comes to cream foundation, blush and eye shadow those are probably good for a year. Powder foundation, blush and eye shadow will keep for up to two years. Lipsticks are good for up to two years as well.

Eye liner and mascara have a much shorter shelf life. Jessica says replace those every three to six months.
